Over the weekend, the Lagos Port Complex (LPC), Apapa achieved a historic milestone by successfully docking a vessel measuring 300 meters in length overall (LOA).

This unprecedented achievement highlights the strong dedication of the management led by Mohammed Bello Koko at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to continually invest in port infrastructure and equipment to ensure optimal operations.

The vessel, named Kota Canik, which translates to “beautiful point,” has the capacity to carry up to 6600 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). This event marks a significant turning point and demonstrates the potential that enhanced infrastructure and equipment upgrades can bring.

Furthermore, as part of efforts to enhance navigation safety and elevate Apapa and TinCan Ports to meet international standards, Bello Koko inaugurated two state-of-the-art control towers.

He reiterated the NPA’s commitment to equipping the ports to deliver performance that surpasses stakeholders’ expectations.

In response to this development, Charles Bamidele Okaga, the Port Manager of Lagos Port Complex, expressed the determination of Apapa Port to continuously improve the quality of service that contributed to this milestone.

He assured the liner, Pacific International Line (PIL), that the necessary capabilities to accommodate a 350-meter LOA vessel, which is expected in the future, are already in place.

This remarkable achievement by Apapa Port follows the successful docking of the MSc Maureen, a vessel measuring 300 meters in LOA and 40 meters in breadth, at the TinCan Island Port Complex in Lagos in May.

These accomplishments demonstrate the NPA’s readiness to establish and maintain enhanced performance levels.
