Asari Dokubo, a leader from the Niger Delta, has urged President Bola Tinubu not to set free Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Dokubo expressed this during a press conference following his meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday.
The Niger Delta leader believes that releasing Kanu would be rewarding criminal behavior and the violent killings of innocent people. Instead, he believes Kanu should face legal consequences for his actions. Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in 2021 and is currently facing trial for terrorism.
In 2017, a Federal High Court in Abuja granted Kanu bail, but he violated the bail conditions and subsequently fled the country. He was later re-arrested. Former President Muhammadu Buhari resisted calls to release Kanu during his tenure, but with the new government in power, there have been renewed calls for his release.
Dokubo emphasized that releasing Kanu would be tantamount to endorsing criminality and condoning the brutal murders of innocent people. He believes that Kanu should be held accountable for his actions and the incitements he has carried out.
Dokubo also mentioned that there are ongoing full-scale wars in different parts of the country, with the IPOB/ESN engaging in conflict against the government in the South East, leading to the desertion of many local governments and communities, including schools.
