Liverpool’s 30-year wait for a top-flight English Premier league title is all but over after Chelsea defeated Manchester City 2-1 on Thursday night to officially crown the Reds the 2019-20 Premier League champions.

Liverpool placed themselves very close to the title when they thrashed Crystal Palace 4-0 on Wednesday.

That result mounted more pressure on fellow title contenders Manchester City, as they needed to beat Chelsea to keep their dreams alive.

City left Etihad to Stamford Bridge hoping they could do all they can to delay or possibly prevent Liverpool from winning the league. But a silly red card from City’s long time servant Fernandinho was all that Chelsea needed to break Pep Guadiola’s heart.

The game started well for the home side, with Christian Pulisic opening scoring for Chelsea.

But, Kevin De Bruyne’s stunning second-half free-kick restored parity, before Fernandinho carelessly handled the ball in his own penalty area for William to end their dream from the spot.

The results means that Liverpool have won the Premier League for the first time since 1990, with seven games to spare.

They also became the first Premier League side ever to wrap up the title with at least six matches in hand. What a remarkable season it has been for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
