The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), are in disagreement with the Federal government over their recent directives for schools across the country (including tertiary institutions and unity colleges) to reopen on Monday October 12, 2020.

According to the statement by the president of ASUU, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, Universities across the country will not fully resume unless the government meets the demands of the body.

Zonal Coordinator of the Ibadan Zone, Professor Ade Adejumo had earlier noted that “ASUU went on strike as a result of the combination of three inter-related factors: Nigerian governments’ increasing anti-labour policies and the history of sabotage in the education sector and the government’s refusal to honour the agreement reached with the union for revitalisation of public sector universities.”

Based on these concerns, ASUU have decided that, should the Institutions reopen without meeting their demands, lecturers will not return to classes.

Professor Biodun noted on Friday that the federal government has the right to reopen schools, and the lecturers also have the right to withhold their services.

He said:

“We did not close the universities. It is the right of the government to reopen the universities. It is also the right of lecturers to withhold their services.”
