IUDs (Intrauterine Devices) are very effective ways of preventing pregnancy. Statistics have shown that only one in every 100 women who use an IUD will become pregnant while using the device.

However, IUDs have many risks. Some women have complained about how dangerous IUDs are, and that’s why you have to discuss with your doctor before you think of inserting it.

1. Pelvic Inflammatory Infection 

IUD increases your risk of pelvic inflammatory disease, which is an infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes, or ovaries. Also, the process of inserting the IUD can allow bacteria that causes PID to enter your body.

 

2. Heavy Bleeding 

After using the copper IUD, your periods may become quite heavier for the first few months and may return to normal in six months.

3. Ovarian Cysts 

Studies have shown that in the first year following the placement of an IUD, about 1 in 10 women will develop these fluid-filled sacs or cysts in their ovaries. Although these cysts typically disappear on their own after three months.

 

4. Fainting 

Some women are likely to experience lightheadedness and fainting spells, following the IUD insertion by a doctor.

 

5. Depression 

Hormonal IUDs can also cause mood swings, deep depression and severe cramps. You should see your doctor immediately if you have these symptoms.
