7 Ideal Nigerian Foods for weaning babies

Newborn babies do not breastfeed forever, they will get to a time when they have to be fed with real food other than breast milk.

Some babies start weaning at 6 months, and a good number of them do not easily accept solid food after being used to breast milk.

However, this is something you do over time, and make sure they get used to it.

You could try feeding your baby with a particular kind of food after which you will go to another, rather than using varieties on the child from the beginning.

 

1. Pap

Most Nigerian mothers see pap as the king of babies’ meals. There’s hardly any home with a baby without a pap. It is easy to make, affordable, and available. It can be made from millet, guinea corn, white corn, or yellow corn and it is highly nutritious for the baby. You u could add recommended milk up for more nutritional value.

 

2. Bread and Tea

Bread and tea are another food that is easy to wean a baby with. People cut the bread into tiny portions and dip it in the tea. The tea should be made with warm water, it shouldn’t be too hot or too cold to make it easy for the child to take.

3. Okra soup

Okra is a popular Nigerian food for weaning babies. It’s easy to take and highly nutritious. Okra contains soluble fiber and vitamin K. Make tiny balls of eba to go with the soup, it should be very soft.

 

4. Semi-ripe plantain

Semip-ripe plantain is an ideal food to wean your child with because it has a little bit of sweet taste which will make your child want to eat it.

 

5. Boiled yam

Boiled yam is another food to wean your child with. Make sure the yam is very soft. you could mash it with beans vegetable stew or even with just palm oil.

 

6. Boiled sweet potatoes

Just like semi-ripe plantain, sweet potatoes have a naturally sweet taste that will make the child want to eat them.

 

7. Beans porridge

If you grew up in a Nigerian home you would have been familiar with the belief that beans make children grow taller. Aside from that, beans are such a good source of protein for the child. Be sure to cook beans to be properly done.
