Gernot Rohr reveals why Nigeria couldn’t defeat Sierra Leone
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter
Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr has stated the possible reason why his team failed in their second attempt to defeat less fancied Sierra Leone.

Rohr promised ahead of their encounter that his team would follow their tradition by qualifying for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations with two games to spare.

But a disappointing 4-4 draw at home, followed by a goalless draw on Tuesday evening, away to Sierra Leone ruined such expectations.

Super Eagles obviously surrendered their 4-0 lead at home, as a result of nonchalance. But Rohr believes that the goalless draw played on Tuesday was due to the poor condition of the Siaka Stevens Stadium in Freetown.

One of the talking points from the game was Kelechi Iheanacho’s disallowed goal in the second half. Though the coach declined talking about the disallowed goal, but he did mention that his team managed to play in the very difficult stadium.

“I don’t know if the goal was offside or not, but we tried, we tried to play well on this difficult pitch and congrats to the players,” Rohr said.

“They showed that they can fight together and play a goalless draw away”.

Nigeria would have snatched all three points and qualified for AFCON, had the referee not ruled out Kelechi’s headed effort in the 62nd minute for offside.

As leaders of the Group L with 8 points, Super Eagles are in pole position to qualify, but they’ll have to wait until March 2021 to be sure.
