A two-year-old boy has died in a tragic handgun incident.
Leighton Seals picked up a handgun and accidentally shot himself as his mother fed her baby daughter in the next room.
The tragedy unfolded just after midday Tuesday in Fairmont, Indiana in the US.
The little boy found the nine-millimetre Ruger handgun in a bedroom, Metro UK reports.
His 22-year-old mother, Caci Seals, was just metres away at the time of the shooting but his father Noah Collins was not home at the time.
“Evidence indicates the boy pulled the trigger on the Ruger and was struck by a single bullet,” an Indiana State Police spokesman said.
Leighton was rushed to hospital but doctors were unable to save him, and he was later pronounced dead.
The police spokesman said there was an “ongoing investigation” into Leighton’s death.
The spokesman added that no further information on the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including where the gun was when Leighton picked it up, would be released.

The spokesman said police findings would be passed to a prosecutor once the investigation had finished, meaning criminal charges could follow.
