According to scientists there are tiny mites called Demodex living and having sex on your face.

Demodex mites are microscopic arachnids that are commonly found on the skin of mammals, including humans. There are two species of Demodex mites that inhabit human skin: Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis. These mites are naturally present on most people’s skin and are typically harmless.

Demodex mites are usually found in hair follicles and sebaceous glands, particularly on the face, especially around the nose, forehead, and cheeks. They feed on dead skin cells and oils produced by the skin. While they are generally harmless and their presence is considered a normal part of the skin’s ecosystem, an excessive number of these mites may sometimes contribute to certain skin conditions.

Demodex follicularum
Demodex follicularum, as the scientists call them, are just 0.3mm long

As for their reproductive behavior, Demodex mites are known to mate and lay eggs in the hair follicles and oil glands of the skin. The mites have a short life cycle, with a lifespan of a few weeks. The female mites lay eggs, and the offspring go through several stages of development before reaching maturity.

It’s important to note that while Demodex mites are present on most people’s skin, not everyone experiences any negative effects from their presence. However, in some cases, an overgrowth of these mites may lead to skin issues, such as rosacea or a condition called demodicosis, which can cause redness, itching, and other discomforts.

If you have concerns about your skin or suspect any issues related to Demodex mites, it’s best to consult a dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment options
