Onyeka Onwenu, the legendary singer, journalist, and cultural icon, known fondly as the “Elegant Stallion,” was laid to rest in a heartfelt ceremony in Lagos. Onwenu, who passed away on July 30, 2024, at the age of 72, succumbed to injuries she sustained after a fall during an event honoring Dr. Stella Okoli, the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.

The incident took place at Reddington Hospital in Ikeja, where Onwenu was being treated before she tragically passed away. Her funeral service was held at The Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos, followed by a private burial at a mausoleum in Ikoyi.

The ceremony attracted prominent figures, including former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti. She is survived by her two sons.

Footage of the burial has surfaced online, prompting an emotional response from fans and admirers across the country. Many took to social media to pay tribute to the late cultural icon. Comments ranged from poignant reflections on life’s brevity to criticisms of the decision to hold her burial in Lagos rather than her ancestral home in the East. One user explained that Onwenu was married to a Yoruba man, which influenced the burial location. Despite the mixed reactions, the overwhelming sentiment was one of deep respect and admiration for Onwenu’s enduring legacy.

Her passing marks the end of an era, but her contributions to music, culture, and social causes will continue to resonate in Nigeria and beyond.
