Edwin van der Sar is currently in the intensive care unit of a hospital after experiencing a brain haemorrhage, according to an announcement made by his former club, Ajax.

The 52-year-old, who previously played for Ajax and later Manchester United, was on vacation on a Croatian island when he fell ill. Ajax stated on Twitter that Van der Sar is in a stable condition, but more specific updates will be provided as soon as additional information becomes available. The club expressed their well wishes for his speedy recovery and assured him that they are thinking of him.

In May, Van der Sar resigned from his position as Ajax chief executive, citing a challenging period of over ten years leading the Amsterdam club. This decision followed Ajax’s disappointing season, which marked their worst performance in 14 years as they finished third in the Eredivisie.

Recognized as one of the greatest goalkeepers in history, Van der Sar had a successful tenure at Ajax from 1990 to 1999, winning the Champions League in 1995. He later achieved European success again in 2008 with Manchester United after playing for Juventus and Fulham. Van der Sar returned to Ajax in 2012 as the director of marketing and was promoted to CEO four years later. Additionally, he holds the distinction of being the second-highest capped player for the Netherlands national team, with 130 international appearances.
