A Twitter user identified as Tunde Onakoya shared a transforming photo of a boy he picked from the slums of Ikorodu months back.

On his Twitter page, he wrote;

About a year ago, I found this little boy in the slums of Ikorodu picking scraps from the floor, I adopted him and he has lived with me ever since then. Today is his first day at school.

From a story written by Chukwuma Gemdeconq Ezeh on Tunde Onakoya’s Facebook page, the little boy whose real name is Sunday has been living with Tunde for months.

Tunde met Sunday a couple of months ago picking scraps under heavy rain, walked up to him and took him to a shed where he fed him.

After that, Sunday was taken to a community health centre where he was diagnosed with a blood infection and malaria, Tunde got Sunday’s medication and took him home.

Ever since Sunday left the tough life in Ikorodu, he has gotten a new life and celebrated his birthday for the first time.

Sunday who couldn’t speak English can now speak the basics of English and has also stepped up to be a pro in playing chess.

In an interview with The Guardian Life on 27 June 2021, Tunde revealed that what motivated him to bring Chess to Slums Africa was leaving Ikorodu as a child and going back there to see that nothing has changed.

There were still children on the street without access to education- He added.

He feared that those children may never get to showcase their true potential, so he took his friends back to the community and started teaching the children chess, “as a way to get them off the street and engage their minds and teach them skills that would expose them to opportunities beyond the confines of their environment.”

It was also Chess in Slums Africa that brought Adeoye Fawaz to the spotlight after he emerged winner on Chess in Slums and Mental maths champion in Ikorodu.
