Chukwuemeka Eze, a Nigerian electrical engineer and innovator, has been shortlisted by the United Kingdom Royal Academy of Engineering for the 2023 Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation.

This prestigious award recognizes outstanding engineering innovations in Africa and is the largest of its kind on the continent. The finalists for this year’s prize come from Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda, all of which have previously produced Africa Prize winners.

According to a statement from the Royal Academy of Engineering, the eventual winner of the prize will receive a cash award of £25,000. Additionally, the other three finalists will be awarded £10,000 each. Two more Nigerians will compete alongside nine other innovators, including two Ghanaians, for the “One to Watch” Award, which is determined by public voting and carries a cash prize of £5,000.

Chukwuemeka Eze’s innovation, called the Revive Kit, is a modular e-mobility service designed to convert gas-powered three-wheeled motorbikes into vehicles powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.

By using the Revive Kit, drivers can significantly reduce operational costs by up to 60%, including savings on gas or petrol, as well as maintenance costs by 90%. Eze’s company also provides training for technicians on how to use the kit, which consists of lithium-ion batteries, an AC induction motor, a retrofit shaft, an electronic controller functioning as an inverter, and a vehicle-to-home power adapter.

The winner of the Africa Prize 2023 will be announced on July 6th, 2023, in Accra, Ghana.
