In Yoruba culture, the swift burial of Mohbad, whose real name was IleriOluwa Aloba, within 24 hours of his passing on September 12, has raised questions. Joseph Aloba, Mohbad’s father, recently explained the rationale behind this decision in an interview posted by Temilola Sobola on Instagram, dated September 19.

According to Joseph Aloba, Yoruba tradition discourages the preservation of a young person’s corpse when both parents are alive. Had Mohbad reached an older age at the time of his demise, the option of storing his body in a mortuary might have been considered. He emphasized that the burial took place on a piece of land that Mohbad owned, which he had gifted to his father for the construction of a church. This act was in alignment with Yoruba customs.

Joseph Aloba clarified that, in Yoruba land, it’s customary not to keep a young person’s corpse when both parents are alive. He further explained that the land used for Mohbad’s burial was the only property he knew his son to possess, as Mohbad had given it to him for the church project. However, this decision has drawn criticism from many Nigerians who argue that an autopsy should have been conducted to determine the cause of Mohbad’s untimely death before burial.
