The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Chief Gani Adams, expressed his view that the 1999 constitution is the main issue facing Nigeria and called for a complete review of the constitution before the country can make progress. Adams also mentioned that the constitution serves as a military tool that President Bola Tinubu should reconsider.
Adams made these remarks during his speech at the 30th anniversary of June 12 and Democracy Day event titled “June 12, 1993, Identity Politics and the National Question: Thirty Years After,” held in Lagos State on Monday.
According to Adams, Nigeria cannot make significant achievements if it continues to be bound by the 1999 Constitution, which is currently in use. He believes that both the 1979 and 1999 Constitutions were imposed on the country by the military to protect their wrongdoings.
Adams emphasized the need for the new president to find a solution to this issue that could hinder the country’s progress. He argued that Nigeria cannot move forward unless there is a comprehensive review or overhaul of the 1999 Constitution.
He further stated that embracing regionalism and allowing the constituent units to develop at their own pace is essential for Nigeria to achieve its ambitious goals.
Adams called on the new administration led by President Tinubu to adopt policies that prioritize the welfare of the people. He expressed concern about the suffering Nigeria has endured and warned of disastrous consequences if the current administration continues to neglect the people’s needs.
Additionally, Adams urged the president to honor the legacy of the annulled 1999 election, won by Moshood Abiola of the Social Democratic Party, by ensuring that democracy is upheld and respected.
