According to her son, an elderly woman from Ecuador who had been declared dead by a state hospital two days earlier was discovered alive inside a coffin during her own wake.
In a video shared on Twitter, 76-year-old Bella Montoya can be seen breathing heavily while two men assist her. After a five-hour wake, she started hitting the coffin with her left hand.
Due to the hospital’s declaration of her death, her son had to arrange for a donated coffin for their financially struggling family and even received a death certificate.
Ecuadoran media covered the incident, with headlines highlighting the woman’s “resurrection.” Montoya, who had been admitted to the hospital with a suspected stroke and experienced cardiorespiratory arrest without responding to resuscitation efforts, is now receiving treatment at the same hospital.
The Ministry of Health has formed a committee to investigate the matter and will oversee Montoya’s care. Her son expressed his hope for her recovery and stated his desire to have her alive and by his side.
