Do’s and Don’ts of an Ulcer patient

Ulcer is a sore that on the lining of the oesophagus, stomach or small intestine. It occurs when stomach acid damages lining bod digestive tract.

Some factors that can lead to ulcer include:

  • Heavy alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Abuse of over-the-counter drugs
  • Psychological stress

Ulcer can cause loss of appetite, abdominal pain, vomiting, weight loss or vomiting.

Do’s

• An ulcer patient should eat healthily; certain foods are recommended.

  • Foods that are high in fiber, especially, friuts and vegetables.
  • Nuts
  • Drinks that revfree from caffeine
  • Food that are low in fat
  • Healthy cooking oil

• Taking Recommended drugs judiciously – Take only prescribed drugs, follow directives and finish the entire dosage.

• Stay hydrated always.

• Pay attention to your mental health – Stress and depression can cause people ulcer indirectly.

• Always sit upright while eating.

 

Don’ts

• Don’t Smoke – Smoking slows down ulcer healing process.

• Avoid Alcohol and coffee – Alcohol can irritate and damage digestive tract.

° Habits like these increase the production of gastric acid and weakens the mucosal barrier of the GI tract promoting ulcer formation and slows ulcer healing.

• Avoid taking aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medications.

• Avoid certain foods that may cause discomfort for an Ulcer patient such as:

  • Spicy foods
  • Foods with high fat content
  • Chocolate
  • Citrus fruits (in some cases)

• Avoid taking so much dairy products – Milk can make you feel better for a while but it is not a cure for ulcer. In fact, drinking too much milk can cause increase in stomach acid and make stomach worse.
