Nzu or calabash chalk is a clay substance made from mining pots or mixing clay, wood, salt, and ash. It can be in powdered or moulded form.

Nzu can be used for religious activities or eaten casually.

Aside from religious or eating it just for pleasure, nzu is widely eaten by pregnant women who eat it for the sake of morning sickness, vomiting, or spitting.

1. It is addictive 

If you’ve seen people who take nzu, they ate likely to take it always. For some people, nzu becomes a part of their daily activities.

 

2. Risk of anemia

Prolonged consumption of nzu can cause anemia, especially in women of childbearing age. It is likely to change the concentration of hemoglobin, red blood cell count, and platelet count.

3. Can cause problems for pregnant women and nursing mothers 

Women who use it for the long term can risk having high blood pressure. It also affects the baby’s bone health and inhibits material weight gain and fetal growth.

 

4. Harm digestive system 

The materials and mixture used in making nzu can cause harm to the digestive system when eaten.

 

5. Possible health issues

Nzu can lead your body to lose iron and potassium which are essential for healthy living. It can cause you to experience weakness in your muscles, and skin and may even cause difficulty with breathing.
