According to several dictionaries, the word ‘dear’ is used to describe someone or something that you feel deep affection for. It can also be used as a form of polite address – such as “Dear Ma”, “Dear Sir” e.t.c.
However, most people are of the opinion that the use of expressions such as dear, darling, sweetheart and honey has lost much of their potency in modern conversation, as they can be used for virtually anyone.
For the naive ones, it can be very misleading especially when the opposite sex often uses the word dear. What do you make out of it? Does she like you in that special way?

Well, sometimes it doesn’t mean anything special, it can just be a friendly way of showing respect and care especially if the two already know each other.
But what if they have switched suddenly from the normal hello/hi to dear? In that case, there could be an attachment. I don’t know about you, but from experience, when someone especially the opposite sex begins to call you dear after some period of time, then they mostly have something for you.
It is left for you to read in between the lines, to ascertain whether it is love, infatuation or something else.
