Singer Teniola Apata, widely recognized as Teni, has disclosed a deeply tragic and pivotal moment in her life. She recounted the heart-wrenching event when her father, Simeon Apata, a retired Nigerian army Brigadier-General, was brutally murdered in the presence of her and their family members. This horrifying incident took place on January 8, 1995, when armed assailants stormed their home in Lagos.
At the time of the attack, Teni was merely two years old, and the memory of that fateful day has left an indelible mark on her existence. The trauma stemming from the loss of her father has cast a long shadow over her life.
In her interview on the Tea With Tay podcast, hosted by actor Temisan Emmanuel Ahwieh, also known as Taymesan, Teni offered insights into her father’s character. Brig. Gen. Apata was not only a stern disciplinarian but also a soldier and the proprietor of Apata Memorial High School. He was renowned for his philanthropic endeavors.
Losing her father at such a tender age, particularly in such a harrowing manner, had a profound impact on Teni. It deprived her of the presence of a paternal figure during her upbringing and sowed seeds of mistrust within her. The fact that the gunmen invaded their home with the specific intention of assassinating her father only exacerbated the anguish of this painful memory.
