Migraine: causes and ways to deal with it

Migraine is a common disease that causes variety of symptoms mostly a pulsing headache on one side of your head. Migraine is more than just headache, it is severe and can last for about 4-72 hours.

Symptoms of migraine can be:

  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting

Causes of migraine are:

1. Excess intake of alcohol and caffeine.

2. Change of weather: excessive heat and change in weather can trigger migraine. High heat can lead to dehydration which can also be a cause of migraine.

3. Irregular sleep: Sleep is important to the health because it renews and repairs all parts of the body including the brain. When you always deny your body of sleep, you are likely going to have migraine in the long run.

4. Stress: Stress is the most common cause of migraine. People who stress themselves a lot are prone to migraine.

5. Diet: diets like chocolate, cheese, artificial sweeteners are prone to cause migraine.

6. Dehydration

7. Frequent use of pain-relieving medication

8. Loud noises

9. Exposure to smoke or certain odours.

 

Ways we can deal with migraine include:

1. Reduce intake of caffeine and alcohol

2. Try to go to bed at the same time every night. Aim to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep everyday, avoid things that could come as distractions or hindrance to your sleep or sleep time.

3. Reduce stress. If possible create a schedule that you will follow to avoid overthinking and mental stress. When you have made a schedule, try to stick to it.

4. Avoid too much sugary foods or artificial sweeteners that could cause migraine.

5. Get a massage- a massage can help you to reduce stress, massage your forehead, temples and neck to ease tension which may result from stress.

6. Try not to chew- chewing gum can hurt your head especially when you are experiencing migraine. Avoid chewing crunchy or sticky foods and if you should do, chew in small bites.

7. Try a cold or warm compress. Place a warm or cold compress across your forehead or back of your neck.

8. Engage in relaxation techniques such as
Yoga or meditation.
