Nigeria is an African country, located inĀ  West Africa. Nigeria is a former colony under British. Nigeria stopped being a colony of the British after she gained independence on 1st October, 1960 and became a republic in October 1963, with Nnamdi Azikiwe as the first Republican President.

Nigeria has 36 states across the federation.

1. Nigeria became amalgamated in 1914. This is the merging Northern and Southern protectorates to form Nigeria.

4. Agbani Darego was the first woman to win the miss world pageant. She is from River state and has worked with top fashion brands like Christian Dior and Avon.

5. Three Nigerians- Seun Adigun, Ngozi Onwumere and Akuoma Omeoja were the first Africans to qualify for the Olympics bobsledding events in 2018.

6. Nigeria won its first oympic golf medal in 1996 with the men’s football team winning Golf and Chioma Ajunwa winning a Golf medal in the women long jump event.

7. Nigeria civil war lasted from 1967-1970

9. Wole Soyinka was the first African recipient for the Nobel prize of Literature.

10. Nigeria is the most populous country in the west Africa.

11. The major religion in Nigeria is Christianity and Islamic religion.

12. Lagos was the former capital of Nigeria before being moved to Abuja.

13. Nigeria is the home to the richest man in Africa- Aliko Dangote

14. Nigeria is a member of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and African Union (AU).
