American singer, R. Kelly has been sentenced to 30 years jail term for sexual charges.
The 55-year-old R&B singer is likely to spend the rest of his life in prison.
He is reported by New York Times to have long escaped criminal penalties despite decades of sexual misconduct allegations.
A U.S attorney in Brooklyn, Breon S. Peace spoke to reporters outside the court house saying that the court’s rule is a significant outcome for all victims of R. Kelly. He also added that R. Kelly has continued committing sexual crimes, and has avoided punishment for sexual charges.
Ahead of his sentencing, a handful of women protested against R. Kelly’s long abuse.
R. Kelly was convicted on sex trafficking and racketeering charges last September.
Meanwhile, R. Kelly’s lawyer had argued to the court that R. Kelly should not get more than 10 years in prison because he had a traumatized childhood that involved, severe and prolonged childhood sexual abuse, poverty, and violence.
