Niger Republic coup plotters are refusing to give up power to President Mohamed Bazoum. ActionAid Nigeria (AAN) conveyed to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) that diplomatic solutions are necessary for the Niger Republic crisis. The Vice Chair of AAN, Imoni Amarere, emphasized the importance of dialogue due to Nigeria’s proximity to Niger and its role as a route for terrorists entering Nigeria’s northern regions, exacerbating security challenges.
During a press conference following AAN’s Annual General Meeting, concerns and recommendations were presented by Prof Patricia Donli, the former Board Chair. AAN criticized the military coup as undemocratic and highlighted that ECOWAS must prioritize diplomacy and dialogue over military intervention, considering the recent coups in the region.
The organization expressed concerns about the erosion of democratic gains, urging the African Union and ECOWAS to handle the situation strategically to prevent foreign superpowers from exploiting the crisis. AAN emphasized the need for sustainable programs beyond short-term relief efforts to address poverty, unemployment, and rising costs of living.
Ene Obi, the Country Director of AAN, called for attention to the young population in Nigeria. The General Assembly of AAN also made several recommendations, including establishing credible social welfare programs, distributing education loans fairly, investing in sustainable agriculture, prioritizing flood control measures, and strategically investing in healthcare, education, infrastructure, and technology.
Furthermore, AAN urged the government to ensure secure electoral processes during the off-cycle Governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States. The organization criticized the lack of representation for Persons with Disabilities (PWD) and the low inclusion of women in the ministerial nominee list, calling for urgent improvements.
In summary, ActionAid Nigeria emphasizes the need for diplomatic solutions to the Niger Republic coup crisis and advocates for sustainable programs, fair representation, and strategic investments to address various challenges faced by Nigeria.
