West African leaders have issued a warning of possible military action against Niger’s military junta, which seized power in a coup last week.
They demand the reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum, currently held captive by the junta. The leaders held crisis talks and vowed “zero tolerance” for coups, threatening intervention if their demands are not met within a week. Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno visited Niamey on behalf of Ecowas to call for the junta to step down.
The situation has prompted concern that Niger might lean towards Russia. France, the former colonial power, and other nations have taken measures such as the enforcement of a no-fly zone, financial sanctions, and suspending aid to Niger.
