In a surprising turn of events, Nigeria’s Super Falcons secured a 3-2 victory over co-hosts Australia in their second group match of the ongoing Women’s World Cup, significantly improving their chances of advancing to the next round.
Asisat Oshoala, Uchenna Kanu, and Osinachi Ohale were the key players who scored goals, leading the Falcons to claim maximum points against the formidable co-hosts and enhancing their prospects of reaching the quarterfinals.
Oshoala’s impressive strike in the 72nd minute, shortly after coming on as a substitute, added to Nigeria’s outstanding performance during the game.
The hosts had taken the lead just before half-time through a well-executed play by Foord, who found Van Egmond to score her 31st goal in her 130th appearance for the Matildas.
Uchenna Kanu managed to equalize with the final kick of the first half, displaying composure as she skillfully bypassed the Australian defense to score.
Kanu’s goal was set up by an excellent strike from Rasheedat Ajibade on the left side of the attack, as she found the perfect opening to slot the ball home with precision.
Nigeria’s solid defensive strategy and strategic counter-attacks kept them on the verge of taking the lead. Unfortunately, a deflection by Plumptre, which was unintentional, prevented Christy Uchiebe’s superb long-range shot from finding the back of the net in the 41st minute.
Chiamaka Nnadozie also played an outstanding role in goal, ensuring the Falcons didn’t concede any goals during the game, building on her heroic performance against Canada in a previous match.
