PSG officially confirmed Messi’s departure from the team before the match. Despite his significant contribution to PSG and Ligue 1, the fans jeered Messi both during the team announcements and sporadically throughout the game.Given that PSG had already secured their 11th French title the previous weekend, the outcome of the match held little importance.

Nevertheless, PSG squandered a two-goal lead, allowing Clermont to stage a comeback. Sergio Ramos, who also confirmed his departure from PSG on the previous day, marked his final appearance by scoring the opener with a header from a Vitinha cross in the 16th minute.

Mbappe, aiming to finish as Ligue 1’s top scorer for the fifth consecutive season, scored a penalty, marking his 29th league goal of the season. He honored the injured goalkeeper Sergio Rico by displaying his number 16 jersey.

Mbappe emphasized that the most important aspect of the game was paying tribute to Sergio, highlighting that there are more important things in life than football.

As PSG had already secured the championship, the result would not have changed their status even if they had lost by a significant margin. The team wanted to show their support for Sergio in the best way possible.

Mbappe’s goal tally ultimately placed him two goals ahead of Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon in the final standings. Clermont capitalized on a mistake by Marco Verratti, with Johan Gastien scoring a goal for them. Clermont missed a penalty through Grejohn Kyei but managed to equalize in stoppage time of the first half when Mehdi Zeffane netted a close-range shot after Gianluigi Donnarumma spilled the ball. Kyei secured the winning goal for Clermont in the second half by converting a cross with his knee.

Clermont’s victory over PSG was notable, and they finished the season in eighth place. PSG received the championship trophy after the match but ended the season with seven league defeats, all of which occurred in 2023.
