  • Sending Troops To Niger Is Like Declaring Civil War Against Northern Nigeria, El-Rufai Warns Tinubu

Sending Troops To Niger Is Like Declaring Civil War Against Northern Nigeria, El-Rufai Warns Tinubu

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-rufai has warned President Bola Tinubu that if ECOWAS troops launch a military attack on Niger, it is a declaration of civil war against northern Nigeria.

Mr El-Rufai, who has been publicly silent on recent political developments in Niger and ECOWAS’ reactions, gave this warning in a tweet Tuesday morning.

“As ECOWAS beats the drums of war, I recall the 1970s rock classic by Dire Straits – ‘Brothers in Arms’, because a war within our subregion is a war between brothers,” Mr El-Rufai said.

He added that “indeed, the people of Niger Republic are one and the same with those living in Northern Nigeria. Let us bend therefore over backwards to avoid this civil war between brothers.”

Mr El-Rufai’s warning comes after he fell out with Mr Tinubu over ministerial appointment, weeks after ECOWAS charged its troops to be on standby to restore constitutional order in Niger, following the ouster of President Mohamed Bazoum by members of his presidential guards in July.

We Will Not Accept Any Prolonged Transition Again In Niger – ECOWAS Warn Coup Plotters

A three-year power transition plan proposed by Niger Republic’s military junta has been rejected by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Recall that Abdourahmane Tiani, Niger Republic’s self-declared head of state had said on Saturday, August 19, that the country will return to civilian rule within three years.

Reacting to the announcement on Sunday, August 20, Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS commissioner for political affairs said they will no longer accept prolonged transition periods in the region.

    Musah said;

“Ecowas is not accepting any prolonged transition again in the region. They just have to get ready to hand over in the shortest possible time.

“The earlier they give power back to civilians and concentrate on their primary responsibility that is defending the territorial integrity of Niger, the better for them, Military aspect is very much on”.

NIGER Coup Plotters Has Finally Revealed When To Hand Over Power To Civilians

The Niger Republic coup plotters has revealed when they will finally hand over power to civilians.

This comes after ECOWAS Delegates finally met Mohamed Bazoum in Niger.

After the meeting, the head of the Nigeriene junta, General Abdourahmane Tchiani said in a televised speech that, “Our ambition is not to confiscate power. Transition will not exceed three years.

But if there is any attack on us, it would not be a walk in the park for those who intend to carry it out.” General Tchiani explained that they need 3 years to put certain things in place before handing over to a civilian government.

General Tchiani also announced the start of a national dialogue that will last 30 days, to draw up “proposals” that will lay the foundations for a new constitution. This is clearly following in the footsteps of Mali and Burkina Faso who, immediately after seizing power, did away with the overwhelmingly pro-France constitution of their countries that recognized the infamous “PACT for the continuation of colonization” and other colonial era agreements that had kept those countries perpetually in the throes of acute socioeconomic decline.

Mob lynch suspected ritualist in Niger

A suspected ritualist was violently attacked and set on fire by an enraged mob in Lapai, the administrative center of the Lapai local government area in Niger state. This horrific incident unfolded on a Friday afternoon, just before the Jumma’t prayer. The individual in question, identified as Dule Sakon Kano, had been taken into custody while in possession of two young children prior to the mob’s brutal act. During the course of interrogation by the mob, Dule Sakon Kano confessed to engaging in this nefarious activity for a significant period.

His confession revealed that he had been involved in the abhorrent act of providing stolen children to a sinister “master” within the locality. This revelation came in the wake of a disturbing pattern of children suddenly disappearing within and around Lapai town over the past several months, causing heightened concern among the community members.

The fateful day saw Dule Sakon Kano captured with two girls, aged between four and five, who were on an errand to purchase household items just before the Friday Prayers. The residents, driven by a combination of fear, anger, and frustration stemming from the ongoing disappearances and perceived inaction by law enforcement, decided to take justice into their own hands.

Recognizing his sinister intentions, the angry residents pursued and apprehended him near the Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS) along the burial ground road. Dragging him to the center of Lapai town, they delivered a gruesome form of retribution, burning him to ashes.

The tragedy highlights the growing panic and unrest caused by the unchecked abductions of children. While the actions of the mob were undoubtedly extreme, they reflect the frustration and desperation of a community pushed to its limits by a cycle of terrifying disappearances.

  • Tinubu writes National Assembly seeks approval for military action against Niger coupists

Tinubu writes National Assembly seeks approval for military action against Niger coupists

President Bola Tinubu has sent a letter to the Nigerian Senate, informing them about the proposed military action and other sanctions to be taken against the military officers responsible for the recent coup in Niger Republic. This decision was made by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which Tinubu currently leads.

During a session in the Upper Chamber, the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, read the contents of the letter. In the letter, Tinubu expressed ECOWAS’s condemnation of the coup and its commitment to restoring peace in Niger. To achieve this, ECOWAS convened a meeting and formulated a communique outlining several measures:

    1. Closure and monitoring of all land borders with the Niger Republic, including the reactivation of border drilling exercises.

    2. Cutting off electricity supply to the Niger Republic.

    3. Mobilizing international support to implement the provisions of the ECOWAS communique.

    4. Preventing the operation of commercial and special flights to and from the Niger Republic.

    5. Imposing a blockade on goods in transit to Niger, particularly from Lagos and eastern seaports.

    6. Conducting sensitization campaigns for both Nigerians and Niger Republic citizens on the importance of these actions, with a particular focus on social media.

These measures are aimed at exerting pressure on the military junta to restore the democratically elected government in Niger and promote stability in the region. President Tinubu’s letter serves as an official communication to the Nigerian Senate, keeping them informed about ECOWAS’s actions in response to the political situation in Niger Republic.

  • France, Italy set to evacuate citizens from Niger

France, Italy set to evacuate citizens from Niger

Amidst the political turmoil in Niger, the French Foreign Ministry took decisive action, announcing its plans to commence evacuating its citizens from the country on Tuesday. Niger, which recently experienced a military coup, has been a cause of concern for many, especially for those who hold ties to the nation.

France, being the former colonial power of Niger, has about 2,500 soldiers stationed in Niger, as well as in neighboring Chad, and has a vested interest in maintaining stability in the region.

Not only will France be assisting its own citizens in the evacuation, but it also extended its support to other Europeans who wish to leave the country during this tumultuous period. The evacuation efforts are aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of those currently residing in Niger, as the coup has raised serious security concerns.

As the situation unfolds, it has been revealed that there are approximately 500 to 600 French citizens present in Niger, making the evacuation a significant logistical endeavor. Italy has also joined the efforts to bring its citizens back home, with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirming on Twitter that a special flight will be arranged for the evacuation. He reassured that Italy’s embassy in Nigerien capital Niamey will continue to operate despite the unfolding crisis.

On a somber note, the political landscape in Niger took an unexpected turn when officers from General Omar Tchiani’s elite unit detained democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum and declared him deposed. General Tchiani proclaimed himself as the new ruler, leading to pro-coup protests in Niamey over the weekend.

In the midst of this tense situation, reports have emerged of demonstrators gathering in front of the French embassy in Niamey. Some protesters reportedly expressed their discontent by tearing down the embassy plaque, replacing it with Nigerian and Russian flags, and even trampling on it.

Acknowledging the gravity of the crisis, a German government crisis team is set to discuss the situation in Niger at 1 p.m. (1100 GMT) in Berlin. The team will assess the security situation for the nearly 100 German civilians currently in the country and deliberate on the French offer to extend evacuation support to other citizens.

However, evacuation efforts may face some challenges. Nigerian authorities have imposed a ban on flight operations at Niamey airport until Friday, potentially affecting the ability of foreign governments to carry out the evacuations promptly.

The international community has united in condemning the coup, with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) issuing an ultimatum to the coup leaders. ECOWAS demands the release and reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum within a week. Failure to comply with this demand could result in ECOWAS taking measures, which might include the use of force.

In response to the situation, neighboring countries Burkina Faso and Mali issued a joint statement warning ECOWAS against any military intervention in Niger. They considered such action to be tantamount to a declaration of war against them and stated that they would withdraw from ECOWAS if military intervention occurred. Burkina Faso and Mali further pledged to support the Nigerian armed forces and people in self-defense measures if ECOWAS were to intervene with force.

The political landscape in Niger has taken a significant turn with General Omar Tchiani’s self-proclamation as the de facto president. He has suspended the country’s constitution and dissolved all constitutional institutions, further exacerbating the instability in the region.

Apart from the security concerns, Niger’s strategic significance for France lies in its uranium resources. As one of its last local partners in the counterterrorism fight in the wider Sahel region, Niger holds importance for France’s interests in the area.

The evolving situation in Niger remains closely monitored by the international community, with hopes for a peaceful resolution and the safe evacuation of citizens from the country during this challenging period.
