UN Calls for Attention to Iran After A Woman Was Detained for Hijab Protest
The UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran has announced she is closely monitoring the case of a young Iranian girl who was forcibly detained after protesting the mandatory hijab by removing her clothes at Tehran’s Azad University.
Maio Sato shared a video of the incident on the social media platform X, stating she would be watching the situation carefully, especially in regard to how authorities respond.
“I will be monitoring this incident closely, including the authorities response. #Iran,” she wrote.

The footage, which spread widely on Saturday, shows the student in her underwear on campus, being taken into custody by officers. The young woman, was kidnapped by Morality Police shortly after and has not been seen since.
According to Amnesty Iran, there are allegations of beatings and sexual violence against her during arrest. Amnesty Iran also called for the student’s immediate and unconditional release, pressing officials to ensure she is protected from mistreatment while in detention.
