The Presidential Election Tribunal in Abuja has dismissed the petition filed by the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) challenging the dual nomination of Vice-President Kashim Shettima. APM contended that Kashim Shettima’s nomination as the vice-presidential candidate by the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Tinubu, was improper. They argued that Shettima was still the APC’s candidate for the Borno Central Senatorial District on July 14 when he accepted the vice-presidential nomination.
However, on September 6, the PEPT, led by Justice Haruna Tsammani, ruled that this matter falls under pre-election jurisdiction and, therefore, is not within their purview. Additionally, the court held that APM did not have the standing (locus standi) to bring forth concerns related to Shettima’s nomination and sponsorship.
In essence, the tribunal’s decision can be summarized as the dismissal of APM’s petition against Vice-President Shettima’s candidacy for procedural reasons. They emphasized that pre-election matters must be addressed through the appropriate channels, and APM did not have the legal right to challenge Shettima’s nomination.
