Mr. Peter Obi, a candidate from the Labour Party (LP), presented certified copies of election results from six states to support his claim that he won the presidential election held on February 25.
These results were obtained from 115 Local Government Areas and were submitted as evidence before the Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja. Although Obi’s legal team was led by Prof. Awa Kalu, SAN, the election results were presented by Chief Emeka Opoko, SAN.
The results included those from 15 Local Government Areas in Rivers State, 23 in Benue State, 18 in Cross River State, 23 in Niger State, 20 in Osun State, and 16 in Ekiti State.
The court admitted these results as exhibits. The proceedings were adjourned, and the respondents stated that they would challenge the admissibility of the election results in their final written address.
The respondents in the petition included the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and the All Progressives Congress (APC). Obi and the LP are arguing that Tinubu was not the valid winner of the election and that he was not qualified to participate in the presidential contest.
They also raised concerns about corrupt practices and non-compliance with the Electoral Act. The petitioners are seeking various remedies, including declaring Obi as the winner of the election or ordering a fresh election in which Tinubu and the APC would not participate. Obi and his running mate, Baba Ahmed Datti, were present in court during the proceedings.
