Engr. Anslem Ijebor, a prominent member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), criticized the continuous detention of the former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, by the Department of State Security (DSS). Speaking in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, Ijebor, despite being aligned with the PDP, supported Peter Obi in the last presidential election due to his strong convictions.
He strongly condemned the DSS for holding Emefiele in custody, emphasizing that government agencies should lead by example and adhere to court orders. Ijebor stressed the importance of upholding democracy in Nigeria and urged the President not to be perceived as above the law. He expressed his concern that the actions of the DSS are damaging the country’s reputation and undermining its democracy.
In addition to demanding Emefiele’s release, Ijebor called for greater civility, patriotism, and caution from security agencies to preserve the integrity of the Nigerian judicial system.
Regarding the removal of fuel subsidy, the PDP chieftain criticized the timing, stating that it would exacerbate the hardships faced by Nigerians. He questioned the lack of proper palliative measures to cushion the effects of the subsidy removal. Ijebor proposed redirecting the funds saved from the subsidy to key sectors such as agriculture, power, healthcare, and education. He believed that this approach would lead to affordable staple foods, improved healthcare, and accessible education, ultimately enhancing the standard of living for all citizens.
Ijebor expressed confidence in the resilience of Nigerians but emphasized the need for appropriate policy direction to ensure their well-being. He suggested investing in technical education to boost skill acquisition and foster growth in small and medium-scale enterprises, thus propelling the nation’s economy to new heights of prosperity.
