The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have recently and firmly distanced themselves from Simon Ekpa and his supporters, sparking an intense debate and discussion within the movement.
Led by Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB has found itself facing a challenging situation due to the claims made by Ejimakor on Arise Television on July 29, 2023. Ejimakor’s statements suggested that Ekpa’s followers were in some way aligned with Kanu’s followers, creating confusion and tension within the group’s ranks.
To clear the air and set the record straight, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, issued a statement on Tuesday, emphasizing the need for clarification on the matter. In the statement, Comrade Emma Powerful expressed that while it is true that there are some misguided supporters of Ekpa who also consider themselves followers of Kanu, the majority of Ekpa’s supporters have taken a stance against the very mission that IPOB stands for.
The core of the issue lies in the fact that Simon Ekpa has never been an official member of IPOB, nor does he have any formal alliance with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu or the movement. This lack of association raises questions about the authenticity of Ekpa’s claims and actions within the broader context of the struggle for Biafra’s independence. As tensions continue to rise, the debate surrounding Ekpa’s true intentions and motives has become a point of contention among IPOB members and observers.
Adding to the complexity of the situation is the fact that Simon Ekpa leads his own group called Autopilot, and he has openly declared himself as their Prime Minister.
This declaration has not only further distanced him from IPOB but has also raised concerns about his intentions and whether his actions align with the principles and objectives of the movement he claims to support. Some within IPOB have accused Ekpa of working against the organization’s efforts and objectives, which has intensified the divide between his supporters and those who remain loyal to Kanu’s leadership.
One significant issue that has come to light is Ekpa’s failure to attribute the infamous sit-at-home protests to IPOB, despite his claims of seeking the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. This lack of acknowledgment has fueled suspicions and raised questions about Ekpa’s true motives, leaving many wondering if he genuinely supports IPOB’s cause or if he is using it as a guise for his own agenda.
In response to these developments, IPOB’s leadership has issued a stern warning against making any assumptions about Ekpa having any legitimate connection with Kanu and the broader movement. They have urged their followers to be cautious and critical in their analysis of the situation, calling for unity and solidarity in the face of attempts to sow discord and confusion within the ranks.
As the situation unfolds, IPOB finds itself grappling with internal challenges while simultaneously navigating the larger struggle for the recognition of Biafra’s sovereignty. The movement remains steadfast in its commitment to its objectives and principles, despite the recent controversy surrounding Simon Ekpa.
Nonetheless, the issue of Ekpa’s association with IPOB and his motivations continues to be a topic of fervent debate and speculation both within the movement and among observers of the Biafra independence movement.
