The President Bola Tinubu-led federal government has received support from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to create over two million digital jobs in order to decrease the unemployment rate in Nigeria.
Vanessa Phala, the ILO Country Director for Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, expressed this endorsement during the World Youth Skills Day event in Abuja. Phala highlighted the significance of the digital economy in Nigerians’ daily lives, which is shaping various industries and generating more opportunities.
She emphasized the need to equip the country’s youthful population with the necessary skills to succeed in the digital world. Phala mentioned that investing in Nigerian youths, providing them with appropriate skills, and fostering an enabling environment are essential for unlocking their potential. The ILO has been collaborating with the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development to develop the Nigerian Youth Development Action Plan, with a focus on entrepreneurship and other areas.
Phala stated that in order to fully realize the potential of the digital era, young people must not only receive technological training but also possess critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability skills. The ILO is committed to supporting the government in its digital transformation agenda and achieving the goal of creating over two million jobs in the digital economy.
Additionally, George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, emphasized the importance of harnessing young people’s potential as catalysts for transformative change, particularly in the green, digital, and creative economy.
