The suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, was granted bail today (Tuesday) by a Federal High Court in Lagos. The court approved his release upon payment of N20 million and the provision of a surety with an equivalent sum. This bail decision came after the Department of State Service (DSS) charged him with illegal possession of a firearm, comprising two counts.
Emefiele had been in DSS custody for more than a month before this court appearance. His lawyer, Mr. Joseph Daudu, SAN, argued for bail, asserting that the charges against his client were bailable. Upon pleading not guilty to the two-count charge, Emefiele was brought to the court in a white Hillux Pick-up van with its license plate concealed.
At around 9.23 a.m., Emefiele arrived at the court, and a female, whose identity remained unknown at that time, provided him with assistance. He was then led into the courtroom of Justice Nicolas Oweibo, the presiding judge in this case.
