Police arrest prison escapee for beheading retired cop in Imo
One of the inmates who escaped from the Owerri Correctional Centre on April 5, 2021 has been arrested by men of Nigerian Police Command in Imo State.
The suspect Deberechi Chukwu, who is the leader of his cult group was apprehended on Friday for allegedly beheading a retired Chief Superintendent of Police and lawyer, Christian Kpatuma.
Micheal Abattam, the spokesperson for the command confirmed the arrest on Friday.
In a statement, Abatta disclosed that the suspect, Deberechi Chukwu, was one of the inmates who escaped from the Owerri Correctional Centre on April 5, 2021.
Abattam said that after escaping from the prison facility, the suspect recruited some boys who killed and maimed residents of Agwa in the Oguta Local Government Area of the state.
The police spokesperson said Chukwu was fleeing the state after killing the retired CSP when he was arrested by operatives of the command.
Kpatuma was said to have been killed and his corpse dumped in front of his compound after he was abducted from his home by suspected cultists on Tuesday.
“In the course of the investigation, it was revealed that the suspect, Deberechi Chukwu, is a notorious kidnapper and an escapee from the Imo Correctional Center Owerri, Imo State. The suspect, after escaping from the Imo Correctional Centre, recruited young men into his cult group and they terrorised Agwa community.
“It is also on record that he was involved in the killing of a lot of security personnel in the state. However, he has made a useful statement and has volunteered to assist the police in the arrest of other members of his gang presently on the run,” the police statement added.
