According to recent reports more than 3,000 inmates escaped during a prison break in Owerri, Imo State.
Eye witnesses said the attackers struck the prison and the State’s CID police department shortly after midnight on Monday, setting some parts ablaze and freed numerous inmates.

Several pictures and videos circulating on social media shows heavy smokes billowing from was said to be the scene of the attack that lasted for more than two hours.

Although those behind the violence and their motive has not yet been fully ascertained, but rumour has it that the attack came as confrontation intensified between Nigerian security forces and adherents of the IPOB separatist movement across the South-East.
