A Grade 11 student was found rap£d and strangled at her home in Refilwe, Pretoria East Cullinan, on Monday, after the suspect surrendered to police.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane said he was shocked to hear about the student’s 17-year-old Owami Visagie. MEC spokesperson Steve Mabona said the victim was a student at Chipa Thabane Secondary School in Refilwe.
According to the information they have, Visagie attended additional courses over the weekend, including Sunday. Miss Visagie left home on Sunday morning, but at 6 p.m., she was still not home, so her mother filed a missing person report.

Mr Mabona said it was compiled that the victim was last seen with her cousin. He said that on Monday morning, they went to his cousin’s house where Owami’s body was found.
The suspect turned himself in on Monday night and appeared in Bronkhorstspruit District Court on Wednesday. The outcome of the court proceedings and the date of remand are not yet known.
