The President, Muhammadu Buhari through his media aide, Malam Garba Shehu has directed the nation’s security and intelligence agencies to intensify the clampdown on illegal refineries so as to safeguard the lives of the citizens. This statement was made on Sunday, 24th April, 2022 in Abuja.

Malam Garba Shehu, media aide to Buhari said the directive followed the reported deaths of people on Friday night, after an illegal refinery exploded at Abaezi forest in Ohaji-Egbema local government area of Imo State. He further described what happened as a “catastrophe and a national disaster”. Buhari further said that those responsible for the loss of lives are those who sponsored the illegal refinery and “who must all be caught and made to face justice”.
The President further conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the government of Imo State in general. He also urged community leaders and security agencies never to allow this heart-breaking incident to happen in any part of the country again.
