The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, announced that the State Government will begin paying the overdue salary arrears owed to workers by the previous administration starting from the end of June.
Governor Otti stated that a forensic audit of the workers has commenced to determine the actual number of employees in the state.
During his inaugural speech, Otti had promised to settle all outstanding salary debts before the end of 2023. Some workers had been owed salary arrears for over 30 months during the previous administration of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.
The workers, who had been on an indefinite strike, suspended their strike shortly after Otti assumed office to allow for a smooth transition.
Governor Otti mentioned at a reception in honor of Hon. Obi Aguocha, the representative of Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency, that his administration is implementing measures to clear the inherited debt of nearly N200 billion from the previous government led by Ikpeazu.
Otti assured that confirmed salary arrears would start being paid by the end of the current month, acknowledging the long-standing pension arrears owed to retired individuals and promising to address those as well.
He explained that the delay in payment was due to the discovery of fictitious figures and unverified data, prompting the government to conduct a thorough verification process. Governor Otti urged the public to be patient and understanding as they strive to improve the condition of Abia State.
In his remarks, Hon. Aguocha expressed gratitude to Dr. Otti for his support in his electoral victory and pledged to assist the Governor in the efforts to reposition Abia State.
