The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has scheduled a meeting on Thursday with relevant stakeholders to address the crisis between the Federal Government and the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD). This comes after he met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday, as part of the House’s efforts to resolve the matter.
During Wednesday’s plenary, the Majority Leader of the House, Prof Julius Ihonvbere, revealed the Speaker’s actions and expressed dissatisfaction with NARD’s decision to proceed with the planned strike despite the intervention by Parliament.
Hon. Unyime Idem attempted to present a motion of urgent public importance regarding the NARD strike, but the former Deputy Speaker, Hon. Ahmed Wase, pointed out that the Speaker was already working on the issue.
Ihonvbere reassured the House that their intervention efforts would continue even though the resident doctors had gone on strike. He mentioned the progress made in addressing the doctors’ needs through discussions with the President and the scheduling of a meeting with all stakeholders, including NARD members.
The Deputy Speaker, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, presiding over the session, emphasized the importance the Parliament attached to the doctors’ demands and urged them to be patient as the House actively engages with them and the Executive to address their reasonable needs for a better working condition in serving the people.
