Onyeka Onwenu, the legendary singer, journalist, and cultural icon, known fondly as the “Elegant Stallion,” was laid to rest in a heartfelt ceremony in Lagos. Onwenu, who passed away on July 30, 2024, at the age of 72, succumbed to injuries she sustained after a fall during an event honoring Dr. Stella Okoli, the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
The incident took place at Reddington Hospital in Ikeja, where Onwenu was being treated before she tragically passed away. Her funeral service was held at The Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos, followed by a private burial at a mausoleum in Ikoyi.

The ceremony attracted prominent figures, including former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti. Onwenu’s death has left a significant void in the hearts of many Nigerians, as she was not only a celebrated musician but also a respected broadcaster, actor, politician, and activist. She is survived by her two sons.
