Residents of Oji River Local Government Area in Enugu State experienced heightened tension on Thursday due to the tragic incident that unfolded along the Enugu-Onitsha expressway. A truck driver lost his life at Ugwuoba, as he was confronted by touts who demanded produce fees on behalf of the state government. The touts fatally stabbed the driver with a knife, known as “daga,” around 9:30 am and then fled the scene.
The truck had been en route from Wukari in Taraba State to Awka in Anambra State when it encountered the touts at Ugwuoba in Oji River council area. An altercation ensued during the produce collection process, leading to the fatal stabbing of the driver.
In response to the tragic event, truck drivers staged a protest by blocking both the new and old roads for over two hours, leaving travelers stranded. One of the drivers voiced their frustration, stating that they would not unblock the roads until the Enugu State Governor or a state government representative addressed their concerns. They expressed their anguish over the repeated killings of their fellow drivers by the touts, emphasizing that this had to stop.
According to an anonymous eyewitness, the driver had claimed to have already paid the produce tax, but the touts insisted on an additional payment. A dispute ensued, and the situation escalated, leading to the fatal stabbing on the left side of the driver’s chest.
This tragic incident has left the local community in sorrow and frustration, as they call for action to address the violence and ensure the safety of truck drivers using the route. The demand for justice and an end to such violence resonates deeply among those affected by this heart-wrenching event.
