Malepona – Being a traditional healer is not uncommon – but being a naked healer, snake and bee-practising one might be somewhat unusual.
“Phushu” Martha Mate better known as “Malepona“, is a Traditional Healer, who is known for treating her patients while naked and with the help of a snake and bees.
She lives in the village of Gatemate in Winterveldt outside Pretoria, South Africa, which is named after her family who are originally from Limpopo.
According to Martha Mate, ‘Malepona’ is a family name passed on to those who has taken over as the naked healer – which entails stripping naked while performing healing rituals.
I know people made all sorts of stories against my grandmother when she was still practicing, and now that I have taken over, the stories is worse, she says.

Martha Mate says her grandmother heals and solve people’s problems using snakes and bees, through the help of her ancestors.
Her grandmother, Mirriam Mate, the former Malepona performed her duties for almost 40 years.
According to her, she became the priestess after her grandmother‘s death.
The 32-year-old woman revealed that the bees were sent to her home by her ancestors and sometimes the bees leaves in the morning but returns home at the end of each day without fail.
She called the snakes which roam around the house freely, her “babies”.
The woman also revealed that there’s is a huge snake that the family does not show to visitors but has been alive since she was a child.
A man who visited her has this to say;
Once went to that thing when I lost my phone,yerr! shit is very scary. Then on my way home I heard I wasn’t alone some bad spirits were following me and I even heard the steps., told my friend that accompanied me, 😄 we ran. After a kilometer or so, they were gone.
