During the 26th convocation ceremony at the Lagos State University, Sanwo-Olu made an announcement of rewarding the best graduating student with cash prices. The governor stated that Yusuf would receive N5 million from him, and the state government would additionally gift her another N5 million.
Yusuf, who hails from Edo state, expressed her gratitude to her parents for inspiring and motivating her to achieve this accomplishment. She shared her experiences as an undergraduate and how she overcame various challenges to emerge as the best graduating student in her class.
She emphasized that her intention in sharing her story was to inspire others who may be facing similar circumstances and striving for excellence. Yusuf explained that she sought financial assistance only when necessary and had faced significant financial constraints during her six-year tenure at LASU. She recounted a time during her second semester of 200 Level when she saved most of her food allowance to afford a browsing phone and computer skills training.
She lived on a diet of garri and groundnuts for a significant portion of the semester, which some of her friends found unusual and shared with others. As she did not have accommodation on campus, she resided in the university premises throughout her undergraduate studies, relying on the security and lighting system provided by the school.
She mentioned the challenge of attending lectures every day while maintaining a pristine appearance, pretending that everything was perfect. Yusuf also discussed her first day at LASU for the physical screening required for admission into the diploma in law program. She spoke of her aspirations and fantasies of achieving remarkable success at the prestigious university. She completed the two-year diploma program with a CGPA of 4.98, the highest in her cohort, which further fueled her desire to graduate with a perfect CGPA at the undergraduate level.
Yusuf appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to invest in the education sector and commended the passing of the Student Loan Act as a significant step forward. She did not wish for future students, especially female students, to experience the financial hardships she endured.
Yusuf expressed her appreciation to the LASU management for providing a supportive and conducive environment that contributed to her outstanding performance. She expressed deep gratitude to her parents for their sacrifices and unwavering support. Her father, a journalist, and her mother, a businesswoman, both served as sources of motivation.
Yusuf also thanked her faculty lecturers for their commitment to excellence and dedication to teaching. Additionally, she took the opportunity to announce the launch of her YouTube channel called “Learning Law with Aminat,” with the aim of giving back to society.
