The cultural abominations in Igbo land is believed to have been made from fear and their primitive nature. Nevertheless, most of these abominations are still being followed till today.
Here are 5 cultural abominations in Igbo land:
1. Committing Suicide
Committing suicide is an abomination and generally frowned upon by all men and even gods. Anyone who commits suicide, is usually not buried within the community but is buried in the forbidden forest or outside the community to prevent the punishment associated with it from befalling others in the community.
Furthermore, several rituals are often carried out after suicide just to cleanse the land from the pollution.
2. Killing an Eke (Python)
Pythons are generally sacred in Igbo land and they are not killed or eaten. They are believed to be the reincarnation of ancestors, and they are also believed to be the guardians of the land.
Pythons are believed to be the children of the sacred river and when killed, can bring havoc to the land. When a python is killed, it is always mourned with grave penalty for the individual who killed it.

3. Eke market day
In Igbo land, Eke market day is a day set aside for the gods. So, on this day, no work is allowed to be done. Everyone is often adviser to be careful on Eke market day, so they don’t incur the wrath of the gods.
4. Giving and receiving gifts in odd number
Giving and receiving gifts in odd numbers is an abomination in Igbo land. Always ensure that when giving gifts, it’s always in even numbers, and the reason for this I’d that two represent their mother’s breasts and a multiplication of blessings.
5. Using left hand
Using left hand isn’t accepted in Igbo land. Usually, a left handed individual is often trained to use the right hand to eat, receive and give things to people. It is considered disrespectful and foolish to use the left hand in public.
