70-year-old Ugandan woman delivers set of twins

Safina Namukwaya, a 70-year-old woman from Uganda, has made history by giving birth to twins—a boy and a girl—through In vitro fertilisation (IVF).

This groundbreaking event occurred at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Kampala, Uganda, with the hospital sharing the momentous news on its Facebook page.

IVF involves fertilizing an egg with sperm in a controlled laboratory setting before implanting it in the woman’s womb. Despite facing challenges during the pregnancy, including abandonment by the children’s father, Namukwaya expressed joy at overcoming the stigma of childlessness.

Having previously given birth in 2020, she now holds the distinction of being the oldest woman in Africa to give birth. This remarkable achievement underscores the advancements in fertility treatments and the resilience of individuals pursuing parenthood against various odds.
