Bed wetting which is medically known as nocturnal enuresis is simply the involuntary loss of urine. It is the habitual and involuntary act of urinating in bed, especially at night when sleeping.
This act is common in young children over the age of five, because studies have proven that children usually acquire the ability to control the urinary bladder within the age of four to five years.
Bed wetting occurs slightly in boys than in girls and it is not considered a disease. Bed wetting can also occur in adults who have pathological conditions.
There are two kinds of bed wetting: The primary enuresis and the secondary enuresis. A child is said to have primary enuresis when he/she has never had any dry night on a regular basis while a child who has had dry nights for some time and then suddenly starts to bed wet is said to have secondary enuresis. Although most children outgrow this habit before adolescence, some may extend up to early adulthood.
Some of the causes of bed wetting include:
- The high intake of soft drinks, tea and refined foods which may cause bladder irritation.
- Late night meals and excessive liquid intake before bed time.
- Food allergies and other allergies also trigger bed wetting.
- Small size of a child’s bladder can also lead to bed wetting.
- Bed wetting can also be inherited.
- Stress, undue mental strain, excessive nervous excitement and insufficient rest can also cause bed wetting.
- Bed wetting can also be linked to some structural defects in the urinary bladder.
Bed wetting can seriously affect a child’s self-esteem and confidence and may lead to psychosocial complications if the condition is not carefully and promptly addressed.
Some natural remedies for bed-wetting include:
- The intake of any form of liquid should be avoided within 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime so that the bladder will be completely empty.
- Sleeping on the side should also be encouraged.
- Avoid scolding a child who bed wets as this may increase the problem. Instead the child should be praised for any dry night.
- Getting sufficient rest can also reduce the risk of bed wetting.
