Liver failure is a chronic and life-threatening condition that requires urgent medical attention. Most times, liver failure is the final stage of many liver diseases. But a rarer and more complicated condition known as acute liver failure happens rapidly, as little as within 48 hours and it can be difficult to detect. Liver failure happens when a large amount of the liver becomes damaged beyond repair and cannot function properly any longer.

Liver failure is also called hepatic failure and it is of two types. Acute liver failure which occurs suddenly and then chronic liver failure which occurs gradually.

Symptoms to look out for include:
- Abdominal swelling (Ascites)
- Yellowing of the skin and eye balls (jaundice)
- Pain in the upper right abdomen
- Vomiting
- A general feeling of sickness (malaise)
- Nausea
- Confusion or disorientation
- Sleepiness
- One’s breath may have a musty or sweet odor
- Tremors
Liver failure can and may develop very fast in an unhealthy person, and it is life-threatening. If you see someone or know anyone going through or developing any of the symptoms listed above, it is highly advisable to seek medical attention right away, because health is wealth.
