Hair relaxers are lotions or creams that make the hair straight and easy to maintain. It has chemical properties that alter the State of the hair and straightens the curls from the hair strand.

It makes the hair easier to style and free from tangling or knotting.

Although a lot of Nigerian women use hair relaxers, it has side effects on the hair.

Here are some side effects outlined:

1. Chemical Burns

Hair relaxers have corrosive ingredients that can burn your skin or may even cause permanent hair loss. The burns may cause scalp infection and require medical treatment.

2. Brittle and Dry hair

Chemical ingredients in hair relaxers can spur inflammation and reaction to the scalp because when the hair is relaxed, it will become weaker and very dry which will require a lot of care to maintain its moisture back.

3. Contains Lye

Most hair relaxers contain lye which is the presence of sodium hydroxide, a harsh chemical with a pit range anywhere from 10-14. For hair relaxers that do not contain lye, the chemical effect is milder.

4. Hair breakage

The brittle nature of the hair after applying the relaxer can increase breakage as it loses its elasticity.
